Are you an unpaid carers who is employed part time or full time? Would you like support and information on what your rights are as a working carer? Are you juggling caring responsibilities, working and managing your own home too? You’re not alone:

  • 5 million people in the UK are juggling caring responsibilities with work – that’s 1 in 7 of the workforce.
  • The significant demands of caring mean that 600 people give up work every day to care for an older or disabled relative.
  • Every day another 6,000 people take on a caring responsibility – that equals over 2 million people each year.
  • 58% of carers are women and 42% are men.
  • 1.4 million people provide over 50 hours of care per week.
  • Over 1 million people care for more than one person
  • As of 2020, Carers UK estimates there are around 13.6 million people caring through the pandemic.
  • Carers save the economy £132 billion per year, an average of £19,336 per carer

We have a dedicated Carer Support Worker within our Carers in Employment Team to provide emotional support and employment information to carers who are in need of additional information and guidance.  For more information call our helpline on 0300 102 0008 

Employers of Carers

Under the ‘Carers in Employment’ contract we can provide support to small and medium size enterprises within Cheshire West and Chester  that will assist in raising the awareness of carers within the workforce. This could be helping a carer understand their rights in work, planning discussions with their employer or assisting organisations to meet the needs of their workforce through training and the development of carer inclusive policies. In partnership with Carers UK we can provide ongoing training and digital resources such as carer passports and flexible working templates. We have a dedicated a Carer in Employment Project Officer who can support your organisation.

For any small or medium size enterprises within Cheshire West and Chester, organisations and staff are able to create an account on the Employers for Carers (EfC) digital platform created by Carers UK.

By using Cheshire West and Chester Councils umbrella membership unique access code staff are able to access a range of resources that can support them to remain in work, including online training modules and resources that can be used as part of a staff induction package. For organisations who would like to work towards recognition for the level of support they provide to staff who are carers, Carers UK have developed the ‘Carer Confident Quality Benchmark Scheme’ that we can support you with. Further details can be provided if you would like more information.
